Terms of Use

By using Bitewise you agree to what follows. If you do not, please do not use the app. It is written to be read, not to be skipped.
1. What Bitewise is
Bitewise reads the ingredient list printed on packaged food, translates it, and compares it with a dietary profile you have typed in yourself. It returns a verdict per entry in that profile and an overall verdict, with the ingredients that caused each one named.
2. The verdicts are informational. They are not medical advice, not a diagnosis, not a prescription and not a substitute for a doctor, a dietitian or the manufacturer of the food. Bitewise can be wrong: a label can be misprinted or out of date, a recipe can change between batches, a photograph can be blurred or cropped, and the model that reads it can misread it. Where the reading is incomplete the app answers “unknown” rather than “safe”, but a wrong answer is always possible.
If a mistake would be dangerous for you — a severe allergy, a medically required diet — do not rely on Bitewise alone. Read the packaging yourself and check with the manufacturer. You remain responsible for what you eat.
3. No account, and the device is the user
There is no registration. Your phone is issued an anonymous identifier and everything the service holds is attached to that. You are responsible for the device you use the app on: anyone with it can see the scans made on it.
4. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- use Bitewise for anything unlawful, or in a way that infringes anyone’s rights;
- upload material you have no right to upload, or that contains other people’s personal data;
- attempt to instruct, jailbreak or manipulate the model through the text you submit, or to extract the prompts behind it;
- probe, scan or interfere with the service, circumvent the scan allowance or rate limits, or use automated means to make requests at volume;
- resell, redistribute or commercially exploit the results, or use them to build a competing dataset or service;
- present a Bitewise verdict to anyone else as professional, medical or regulatory advice.
Requests that plainly abuse the service may be rate-limited or refused.
5. Subscriptions
There are no in-app purchases in the current version. A number of scans is included per device, and the overall verdict, every per-diet check with its reasons, the declared allergens and the “may contain” line are always shown in full. The section below describes the terms that will apply once subscriptions are switched on, and it takes effect only then.
- Bitewise Pro will be offered as an auto-renewing subscription, billed through your App Store or Google Play account. Prices and billing periods are shown in the app before you confirm, in your local currency.
- Where a free trial is offered, any unused part of it is forfeited if you buy a subscription during the trial.
- A subscription renews automatically unless it is cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your account is charged for renewal within the 24 hours before the period ends, at the price then shown for your plan.
- To cancel, or to see the renewal date and price, open your device’s own subscription settings — on iOS: Settings → your name → Subscriptions; on Android: the Play Store app → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. We cannot cancel it for you.
- Cancelling stops the next renewal; access continues to the end of the period already paid for.
- Refunds are handled by Apple or Google under their own terms, not by us. Purchases made through Apple are also subject to Apple’s standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement.
- Prices can change. Where a change affects an existing subscription, you will be told before it takes effect and given the chance to cancel.
6. Availability
Bitewise depends on a network connection and on third-party services, including a model provider and a public product database. It may be unavailable, slow, or limited without notice, and features may be changed or withdrawn. Scans are subject to allowances and rate limits described in the app.
7. Your content
You keep whatever rights you have in the photographs and text you submit. You grant us the permission needed to process them in order to give you an answer and to store them as described in the Privacy Policy. We do not use your photographs to train models. You confirm you are entitled to submit what you submit.
8. Our content
The app, its interface, its text and its underlying rules belong to us. Nothing here transfers any of that to you beyond a personal, non-exclusive, revocable licence to use the app as intended. Product names and packaging that appear in your own photographs belong to their owners; Bitewise claims no association with them and no endorsement by them.
9. No warranty
Bitewise is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that a verdict is correct, that the service will be uninterrupted, or that any defect will be fixed.
10. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, or for any loss arising from reliance on a verdict. Our total liability for any claim relating to the app is limited to the amount you paid for it in the twelve months before the claim.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law, including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain exclusions, in which case they do not apply to you.
11. Ending it
You can stop using Bitewise at any time by deleting your data in Settings and uninstalling the app. We may suspend or end access where these terms are broken.
12. Changes to these terms
If these terms change, the effective date at the top changes and the new version is published here. Continuing to use the app after that means accepting them.
